The Holy Spirit & Direct Messaging

Digital Media focuses on reaching the masses. Top-of-funnel numbers will commonly bolster vanity metrics. But there’s more to a successful campaign than just eyes on a landing page. How can our campaigns increase our ministry's impact? A big opportunity is to incorporate direct messaging into your campaigns.

MII’s Natchi Lazarus talks about this in the video. In digital ministry, it’s better to ask questions than make statements, and direct messaging is a great place to engage, dialogue, and build relationships with people by listening. Direct messaging is an effective way to build trust with people, and a great opportunity to let the Holy Spirit speak into the situation through you.

When done poorly, DMs will come across as automated or spammy. Bad DMing can look like pitching a product, almost sounding like a bad salesman. “Don’t forget to fill out the form.” or “Watch this video!” are not good DMs. This is a lazy approach.

“What do you believe about God?” “What does your family believe?” These are helpful questions to ask, but there are still opportunities to dig deeper towards building relationship.

What if you used direct messaging to get to know the person your campaign reached through the DMs? Even go as far as to check their social media profiles to learn about them, and even pray for them before you re-engage with them via DM. “How can I pray for you?” is always a great question to ask. Even non-believers will accept prayer, and you should type your prayer in the DM so they can see/read it. Other great questions to ask: “Tell me about your family?” “Where did you grow up?” “What do you do for a living and why?” Questions like this will build relational equity via DM, and help the person feel valued beyond being treated “like a number.” Not to mention, the Holy Spirit can use these questions to guide both you and the other person through the DM conversation. As you can see, direct messaging can be a powerful, spiritual tool for your ministry.

Let that be your challenge for 2023: relationally and spiritually take your digital media campaigns to the next level through direct messaging.
